Tonbridge, Kent.

The Chimes occupies a picturesque setting in the Historic Quarter of Tonbridge offering a peaceful oasis in the midst of this bustling historic town. Within a few minutes of the High Street, The Chimes is located at the end of the lane leading to the striking parish church, dating from the 12th Century.

It was once the largest parish church in Kent and well worth a visit with many special items of interest. These include the remains of a13th Century water stoup - parishioners would dip their fingers in the holy water before making the sign of the cross and the piscina, a series of basins used by the priest to wash his hands before celebrating Mass.

The surrounding area still retains the true flavour of English countryside with picturesque villages, castles, stately homes and gardens, making this an ideal destination for guests seeking an historic holiday or for garden lovers. Enjoy a stroll through ten acres of enchantment at Marle Place Gardens with its profusion of scented and unusual plants, woodland walks, Edwardian rockery and Victorian orchid house or visit medieval Penshurst Place with a history going back over six centuries, where in some ways time has stood still.

As the railway station is only a short walk away, you can be amongst London’s finest museums, traditional and contemporary art galleries, theatres and historic landmarks in less than an hour. In fact with so much choice, it’s difficult to know when to begin!

Charmingly furnished to create a comfortable cottage style home from home, The Chimes has a large entrance hall, a well equipped kitchen with extra special touches such as a water softener and a drinking water fountain tap and a light and airy lounge with French doors opening out into a delightful courtyard patio- a lovely secluded corner for alfresco eating or to unwind with a cool drink.

Stairs bathed in light from a large window overlooking the church lead up to the en-suite twin master bedroom, second double bedroom and family bathroom.

Agent’s Note: Additional sleeping facilities for 1 guest on a fold-away bed. No children under 12.

Property Reviews
Excellent; location very handy for restaurants and the High Street. Everything you could possibly want in the property - very well equipped to the highest standard.
The Chimes in Church Lane - yes, I know; but the chiming of the bells every quarter of an hour all through the night was a bit of a distraction for the first couple of nights; might be helpful to point this out for future clients who are sow on the clues like me. That said, I think that is the only very minor complaint about an absolutely excellent property. - JT UK
The Chimes, Tonbridge
This property was right next to the parish church in Tonbridge. It was within easy reach of the bus stops, shops and general facilities without having noisy traffic passing the door. The chimes of the church clock were friendly and non-intrusive which had been a concern. In fact the chimes were turned off at the weekend and we missed them.
The little cottage was lovely. There were just the two of us and we delighted in it. It really felt like a home from home. The kitchen was a dream with everything we could possibly need to make a cup of tea through to entertaining another couple to a three course meal. We used the double bedroom in the front and found plenty of room for our clothes - something often missing these days. The bed was comfortable with little movement - another thing often difficult to find away from home. Fantastic. We slept well and ate well. The lounge dining room was cosy and the heater just right for chilly May evenings. We were able to entertain our friends with plenty of room to move and comfort to sit down. We were visiting from Australia so it was important that friends could visit us with comfort.
We were met on arrival by Jenny Brown and put at our ease immediately. She walked us through the property and showed us our ’Welcome Pack’. This was terrific - milk, butter, eggs, tea, coffee, orange juice, sugar and a loaf of bread from a local bakery. In fact having just flown in from Australia that morning it was wonderful to realise a visit to Waitrose or Somerfields wasn’t necessary at this stage especially as at this stage we had no car.
We were also pleased with the cleanliness of the property and the fact that despite staying three weeks we would not be worried by cleaners arriving as there was a vacuum cleaner etc for us to keep the place in a good state ourselves.
One other thing we really enjoyed was the convenience of two bathrooms and of course the laundry. It was also good to watch the wildlife in the small courtyard which caught the sun early in the day.
I would like to add we were visiting for the saddest of reasons - a friend with terminal cancer - and the ambience of The Chimes helped us through a very difficult time giving us 3 weeks quality time with our friend.

Everything about the property was excellent, could not fault the cleanliness, inclusions, or friendly approach by the owners. Very comfortable, only downside was the chiming of the church clock throughout the night. Should have anticipated this from the name! - JR Australia
