Pluckley, Ashford, Kent.
The sleepy countryside village of Pluckley is not only famous as the backdrop to the hugely successful H.E.Bates TV series “Darling Buds of May,” but also for its more ghostly inhabitants! Pluckley has earned the reputation of being the most haunted village in England (Guinness Book of Records 1998) and every year at Halloween tourists inundate the village hoping to see if they can have a supernatural experience of their own. Nevertheless the village remains unspoilt and picturesque with a warm welcome for anyone seeking a glimpse of the ’perfick’ life. Located just off the picteresque square, the heart of the village, the Old Stables offers a taste of idyllic country living, with a traditional butcher supplying meat from local farms along with homemade sausages and pies, a General Store/Post Office, a 900year old church and of course the quintessential pub. Nestling on the edge of the North Downs and the ’Andredsweald’ (probably one of the oldest woodlands in England), Pluckley has excellent ’away-from-it-all’ walks including the renowned Greensand Way and Pilgrims Way, leading directly from the village.
But there are so many other things to do and see in this beautiful and historic region. Magnificent castles, bewitching gardens, and the awe inspiring Canterbury Cathedral are all within easy reach. Point to point racing at Charing, gliding and light aircraft flying at Headcorn and golf at the famous Chart Hills course, will certainly appeal to sporting enthusiasts. Yet shopaholics are not forgotten with the McArthur Glen Outlet Centre nearby in Ashford and if you are feeling adventurous take the Eurostar from Ashford International Station and experience shopping in "Gay Pari" in under an hour! For retail therapy closer to home, or even a show, London is 75 minutes from Pluckley Station, reputed to be the oldest in the world!
Thoughtfully refurbished with great attention to detail, the Old Stables offers golden wood floors, serene cream walls, warm pine and dark wood furniture, soft leather seating and a traditional Kentish ragstone lounge wall. All combining to give a rustic charm throughout. The Old Stables presents an entrance hall, lounge, spacious dining room, kitchen, WC and single bedroom on the ground floor with a double and twin bedroom and bathroom on the first floor. A delightful flowered rear courtyard gives stunning views over the Weald of Kent -perfect to gaze at the setting sun with a glass of mellow red wine.
