Staplehurst, Kent.

Set in tranquil traditional Kentish park-like grounds interspersed with fruit trees providing a charming backdrop, particularly when in full bloom, Cradduck Oast House and Farm Lodges offer a warm welcome to all. Especially “Edward” the resident horse who likes nothing better than meeting new guests. Originally a religious retreat for an ancient Order of Nuns, the Oast being the chapel, you can still experience the aura of a sanctuary as the extensive grounds ensure you can find a quiet corner where you can get away from everyone to relax!

Staplehurst with its 15th Century church and black and white timbered-framed buildings is often referred to as a village - indeed, it was voted Kent Village of the Year in 2003, and the village sign still proudly welcomes visitors - but really it's grown into a small rural town offering a wide range of local shops. It certainly has a colourful history – back in the 1500's, Queen “Bloody ” Mary's regime burnt at the stake three local women accused of witchcraft and a granite memorial to these Marian Martyrs still survives at Cuckold's Corner. But Staplehurst's biggest claim to fame is a mention in “Our Mutual Friend” by Charles Dickens. Heroically, the classic author helped injured passengers to safety in the 1865 train disaster east of the village and intriguingly he died 5 years to the day after the accident.

Located in an area rich with tourist attractions but also a superb base for walking, bird watching, cycling, horse riding and other outdoor pursuits. Energetic walkers should try the Staplehurst to Tonbridge Trail and cyclists of all ages and abilities will enjoy “The Parish Pedal“ cycle routes. Further afield you will discover Kent's rich heritage, gaze in awe at majestic catherdrals, be dazzled by beautiful gardens and enchanted by splendid castles. Alternatively should you feel like a break from rural life the bright lights of London's West End are under an hour away from Staplehurst Station!
